FRESH MOVEMENT endeavours to explore the stories of our ancestors, identities and experiences. Alongside bridging our dance community in Aotearoa by sharing our aroha for dance to others through our classes, school/national/international tours or highlighting and acknowledging the amazing talent in this country through our showcases and BATTLEZONE events celebrating ALL DANCERS not just Fresh. Juggling all these projects we have been inspired to develop our own theatrical shows and have built a portfolio from the mahi of our elite team of FRESH choreographers, dancers and musicians expressing our love of creativity.
STATION AT TEMPO DANCE FESTIVAL 2022After a sell-out season of their critically acclaimed show, Māui, at the Kiri Te Kanawa Theatre in June, Fresh Movement and the Freshmans Dance Crew are back to tell another precious story that will captivate audiences and celebrate our diverse community.
All walks of life come together at the Station, for a split moment in time our paths cross and our stories intertwine, no one understands our backstory, no one can comprehend where we are going, but it all happens at the Station. This year, Fresh Movement celebrates 10 years of operating. The Station was the first show created by Fresh Movement in 2014, so it is only fitting that we celebrate this milestone by reviving this fan favourite, one last time. 2022’s revival Station is a neo-Pacific / street dance theatre show that tells the stories of characters from different walks of life as their worlds collide at the local train station. This show is action-packed with a stellar cast of young creatives from the Fresh Movement Arts Trust and Freshmans Dance Crew. Station is directed by Hadleigh Pouesi and will feature works from Christopher Ofanoa, Leilani Elliott and more. Station is driven by dance, live music and spoken word that tells a beautiful story and is guaranteed to keep you at the edge of your seat. |
MĀUI 2021MĀUI is a piece that uses dance, music and physical theatre to tell the stories that we grew up with and have travelled throughout the Pacific for hundreds of years. MĀUI demonstrates strength, growth, leadership and vulnerability and through movement these stores are re-told in a way like never before.
Choreographed by Hadleigh Pouesi and Christopher Ofanoa, with music by Tony O’Rourke & Gibson Harris, the production is a retelling of Maui’s legend and stories using the language of dance, projected film sequences and graphic illustrations. "Māui – is part of the revitalisation of Māori and Pasifika stories kicked off by the film Moana”, says director, Hadleigh Pouesi. "At such a young age we let go of the mythology, the Māori stories, the Pacific stories… Māui is about revisiting the Pacific tales that we've told in primary school and kindergarten… [and retelling them through a] more contemporary lens. Māui – features live music, special effects and a fusion of hip-hop, Pacific, Māori and contemporary dance. We take the best of the best and merge it together to create a unique flavour" |
